Blog / Cryptomator for Android: Freemium Now Available

Cryptomator for Android is now available with a new freemium model. Until now, the app was only available as a paid version—going forward, you can get to know Cryptomator for Android for free and upgrade to the full feature set whenever you need to.

This lowers the barrier to entry: more people can experience for themselves how easy client-side encryption is on a smartphone. The basic principle stays the same—your files are encrypted on your device before they are uploaded to the cloud.

Free Entry-Level Version and Full Version

The key difference lies in how you access your vaults: in the free version, you start with read-only access. You can open your vaults and view your encrypted files. Full access—including adding, editing, and managing files—can be unlocked at any time via in-app purchase or by entering your license.

Only in the new app can you also unlock the full feature set via a subscription, in addition to the one-time in-app purchase. While it’s active, you get the complete full version either way—so in everyday use it makes no difference. There is one small difference, though: while the one-time in-app purchase remains permanent, full access with a subscription is tied to its term. Once the subscription ends, you fall back to the read-only access of the free version. In return, a subscription supports the Cryptomator team on an ongoing basis and helps secure the app’s continued development in the long run.

Want to try the complete feature set first? You can do that, too: the free version includes a 30-day trial period during which all features of the full version are available to you.

Where to Get the Freemium Version

Both the new Cryptomator app and the existing license-key variants—such as the ones from our APK Store, the Cryptomator F-Droid repository, the main F-Droid repository, or Accrescent—now support the freemium model. You can download the app for free and upgrade to the full version whenever you need to.

For an overview of all variants, see our Android setup documentation.

What Does This Mean for Existing Users?

For everyone who has already purchased Cryptomator for Android, nothing changes for the worse. The previous app Cryptomator: Full Version remains available—anyone who bought it keeps unrestricted access to the full version and all the features they already use. So you don’t need to switch or reinstall anything: your app works exactly as before.

The same applies to everyone who purchased a license-key variant: with your license key, the full feature set is already unlocked—there’s nothing more you need to do.

Good News for Cryptomator Hub Teams

The new model is especially handy if you use Cryptomator Hub: Hub users can now access their Hub vaults with the free Android app—without any further app purchase or entering a license key. Access is simply handled through your Hub. This makes it even easier to extend secure, encrypted team collaboration to mobile devices.
