Is Cryptomator free to use?
Cryptomator is free to use on Windows, macOS, Linux, and iOS, but not Android (yet). However, the free version on iOS is read-only. If you purchase a license key for one platform, it is not valid for another. A bundle license does not exist.
Why is Cryptomator free to use on some platforms, but not on others?
Our licensing strategy differs across platforms because of constraints imposed by App Store / Google Play policies, and technical differences across operating systems.
Why is the price at checkout different from the price shown on the website?
The base price shown on our website is in EUR and reflects pricing in Germany. At checkout, you may see a different price based on your region. We apply regional pricing adjustments using purchasing power parity (PPP) indices, which means prices can be lower or higher than the base price depending on your country. Additionally, pricing configurations differ across platforms (App Store, Google Play, and Paddle), so we cannot offer identical pricing everywhere despite our best efforts.
Do I need a supporter certificate to use Cryptomator on Desktop?
All functional and encryption features are absolutely free to use on the desktop. By obtaining a supporter certificate, you can unlock the dark mode on desktop apps and also help accelerate Cryptomator’s development. Please note, a supporter certificate is not a license key that can be used to unlock mobile apps.
What does number of licenses mean for a supporter certificate?
One license is valid for one user and can be used on multiple computers.
How can I purchase Cryptomator on Android?
It is a one-time purchase through Google Play or as an APK download from our website or through F-Droid. If you buy the app without going through Google Play, you will receive an Android-only license key. You cannot test the app before purchasing it, but you have a right of withdrawal within 14 days.
How can I purchase Cryptomator on iOS?
We use a freemium model on iOS. You can download the Cryptomator app from the App Store for free and use it in read-only mode indefinitely. A one-time in-app purchase through the App Store will grant you write access.
Is there a freemium version of Cryptomator for Android?
Not yet, but we have plans to introduce a freemium model on Android like we have on iOS. You can keep up with our progress by following this GitHub issue. Stay tuned!
Can I avoid big-tech/gatekeepers for my purchase?
This is possible on Android only, as you can download the Cryptomator app as an APK file or through F-Droid and buy the license using our website. The supporter certificate can only be purchased using our website.
Can I purchase Cryptomator anonymously?
Yes, you can buy a Cryptomator for Android license key or a supporter certificate through ProxyStore. They accept Monero, Bitcoin, and cash. You can read more about our cooperation here.
What should I do if I lose my license key or supporter certificate?
If you’ve lost your license key or supporter certificate, please contact our support team at [email protected]. We’ll assist you in recovering your information.

How are seats calculated?
Only users who are granted access to vaults count towards the seats limit. For example, you can buy 10 seats and still connect your Keycloak instance to an Active Directory with thousands of users. Each user with vault access occupies one seat, regardless of their number of devices.
How is the subscription fee calculated for paid plans?
You can choose between monthly or yearly billing. With yearly billing, you save compared to paying monthly. The fee applies to each seat, even if some seats are unused. If you need to change your billing interval after subscribing, please contact our sales team.
Can I add more seats during the current billing cycle?
Yes, you can add more seats at any time. You can also reduce seats if you no longer need them. Changes are either prorated immediately or deducted in the following year.
Do the paid plans include 5 free seats?
No, you will have to pay for all seats on your plan. We charge for every seat because all users benefit from the extra features enabled by paid plans. For example, all users have full access to the vaults via the mobile apps without having to unlock the full version.
Do you offer discounts?
Yes, we offer discounts for nonprofits and educational institutions. Please contact us to check if you qualify.
Can I pay by invoice or bank transfer?
At the moment, our automatic billing system only supports payment methods offered by our payment processor Paddle, such as PayPal and credit card. If you require alternative payment methods like bank transfer or invoice, please contact our sales team.
Do you offer cloud storage?
No, Cryptomator Hub only adds zero-knowledge key management to Cryptomator. And Cryptomator takes care of encrypting your files on your device. We recommend you to store your vaults on a cloud storage of your choice.
How do I access the contents of a vault?
For the client-side encryption to work, you access the contents of a vault via Cryptomator for Desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux) and Mobile (Android, iOS).
What is the difference between Managed and Self-Hosted?
Cryptomator Hub is available in a managed and a self-hosted version. In the managed version, Skymatic GmbH maintains the infrastructure required for Cryptomator Hub and Keycloak in a ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified data center in the EU and is responsible for security, availability, backups, and up-to-dateness. With the self-hosted version, this is your responsibility.
